The Musical Tuna of Portugal

In addition to being the inspiration for Hogwarts students (from J K Rowling’s time in Porto while writing the first of the Harry Potter series of novels) the University of Porto’s students also have a musical magic act to perform.

The tradition of university Tuna’s (or choir groups) is one steeped in tradition where they would figuratively have to sing for their supper. Their unique clothing of capes and suits (and more traditional finery in other regions) shows its historical roots from the 13th century originating in both Spain and Portugal and spreading throughout both countries. These days it’s not so much for food and survival but for fun, tradition and (as my sources tell me) party money.

The song performed in the clip was filmed on the corner of Santa Catarina next to Majestic Cafe.

English translation below

“Mulher Gorda”

A mulher gorda para mim não me convém
Eu não quero andar na rua
Com as banhas de ninguém

Refrão
Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai, eu gosto dessa mulher
Quero tê-la ao pé de mim
Beijá-la quando quiser
Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai, eu gosto dessa mulher
Quero tê-la ao pé de mim
Beijá-la quando quiser

A mulher magra para mim não me convém
Eu não quero andar na rua
Com o esqueleto de ninguém

Refrão

A mulher alta para mim não me convém
Eu não quero andar na rua
Com o escadote de ninguém

Refrão

A mulher baixa para mim não me convém
Eu não quero andar na rua
Com as muletas de ninguém

Refrão

A mulher doutora para mim não me convém
Eu não quero andar na rua
Com os volumes de ninguém

Refrão

A mulher do Mickey para mim não me convém
Eu não quero andar na rua
Com a rata de ninguém

Refrão

A mulher bonita para mim já me convém
Eu só quero andar na rua
Com a beleza de alguém

Lyrics:

INSTRUMENTAL

Fat woman,

Woe to me does not suit me,

I do not want to walk down the street,

With the flare of anyone.

And thin woman

Woe to me does not suit me,

I do not want to walk down the street,

With the skeleton of anyone.

Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai,

I like this woman,

I want to have it near me,

Kiss her whenever you want.

Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai,

I like this woman,

I want to have it near me,

Kiss her whenever you want.

Tall woman

Woe to me does not suit me,

I do not want to walk down the street,

With the ladder anyone.

Short woman

Woe to me does not suit me,

I do not want to walk down the street,

With the crutch of anyone.

Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai,

I like this woman,

I want to have it near me,

Kiss her whenever you want.

Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai,

I like this woman,

I want to have it near me,

Kiss her whenever you want.

Married woman,

Woe to me does not suit me,

I do not want to walk down the street,

With the wives of anyone.

Woman vain,

Woe to me does not suit me,

I do not want to walk down the street,

With the sieve anyone.

Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai,

I like this woman,

I want to have it near me,

Kiss her whenever you want.

Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai,

I like this woman,

I want to have it near me,

Kiss her whenever you want.

Woman jeitosa,

Woe to me since I must,

Then I want to walk in the street,

With the curves she has.

Portuguese woman,

Woe to me since I must,

Then I want to walk in the street,

With beauty it has.

Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai,

I like this woman,

I want to have it near me,

Kiss her whenever you want.

Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai,

I like this woman,

I want to have it near me,

Kiss her whenever you want.
